Serving the Cedar-Riverside Community with Free Tutoring

Our Mission: Meeting the Needs of the Local Community

Trinity Lutheran Congregation offers "Safe Place: Homework Help" in order to provide supervised study time and tutoring to students in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. It is Trinity's hope that Safe Place will also be a place of mutual respect in the midst of diversity.

Our Purpose: Providing Free Tutoring to All Students

Safe Place provides a safe and inviting atmosphere for students of any background. Tutors are ready to assist students from kindergarteners to adult learners.  Although many students are of East African descent, students of all ethnicities are welcome at Safe Place.

Our History: Serving the Cedar-Riverside Community for Over Ten Years

In Spring 2000, Sylvia Sabo encouraged Trinity Lutheran Congregation to participate in “Listen Up!”, a program which saught to understand student needs in the Cedar-Riverside community.  Students asked for assistance with homework and a safe place to hang out. When the congregation learned of these needs, it began offering a portion of its office as a safe place for homework help.

The Safe Place program was only available on Wednesday afternoons when it first started. The program was operated by
two Augsburg students and some volunteers from the congregation. As time passed, Trinity realized there was a much larger need for the program, and in 2002 a Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) member was hired to expand and manage the program full-time.

On September 9, 2002, Trinity opened the doors of Safe Place for the first time under the leadership of LVC member Becky Rutka.  Under Ms. Rutka’s leadership, the program expanded from one to five days per week.  Safe place developed a strong partnership with a community service class taught at Augsburg as many of the tutors were students at the school. Safe Place has been continuously in operation since 2002, under the leadership of four separate LVC members.
