
Safe Place: Homework Policies
Our goal at Safe Place: Homework Help is to provide a space for kids and youth (grades K-12) to spend time after school and receive tutoring and homework help when needed.
Safe Place: Homework Help welcomes all students and does not discriminate on the basis of:

The staff at Safe Place: Homework Help is not responsible for providing food for students, but are happy to distribute donations from Augsburg College's Campus Kitchens and other organizations.
EXPECTATIONS
Safe Place: Homework Help strives to make competent tutors available to students who have homework in all subject areas.
A. Students at Safe Place: Homework Help are expected to make an effort in doing their own work before relying on the help
of tutors.
B. Tutors at Safe Place: Homework Help are ultimately responsible for assisting in the completion of assignments as well as explaining unknown material to students when possible. Tutors at Safe Place: Homework Help are responsible for helping students to understand and complete assignments, not for completing assignments or portions of assignments in place of students.
BEHAVIOR
All students and tutors are expected to behave with respect for other students and tutors, Safe Place Coordinator, the Safe Place room, and the belongings of all people at Safe Place. All are asked to dress, act, and speak in an appropriate manner.
All students and tutors are expected to remember that Safe Place should remain quiet out of respect for those who are working.
PROGRAM GOALS
The goals of Safe Place: Homework Help tutors include:
1. Using his/her own knowledge of various subjects to help explain questions more clearly, check work, and direct students in their completion of tasks and assignments
2. Helping to empower students to work independently
3. Encouraging academic success and acknowledging prior achievement of students
4. Providing academic and moral support for students when possible
5. Engaging in appropriate behavior and dressing appropriately
6. Creating a safe and comfortable place for students to spend time after school
HARASSMENT and VIOLENCE
Teasing, intimidating, threatening, and terrorizing are prohibited at all times. Violence and the threat of violence is prohibited.
RESPONSE TO BULLYING AND HARASSMENT
First offense: Student will be spoken to by Safe Place Coordinator.
Second Offense: Student will be asked to leave Safe Place for the amount of time determined by coordinator.
Third Offense: Students will be asked to leave for the remainder of the school year. (A conference with the student, student's parent or guardian, and member of Trinity Lutheran Congregation may be scheduled if the student wishes to return to Safe Place: Homework Help. The final decision about allowing the offending student to return to Safe Place: Homework Help will be made by Safe Place Coordinator.) Upon further violations, authorities will be contacted.
WEAPONS
No weapons of any kind are permitted on the premises of Safe Place: Homework Help.
IMPLEMENTATION OF FAMILY-SPECIFIC RULES
Safe Place: Homework Help Coordinator, staff, and tutors shall not be held responsible for the implementation of students' family-specific rules and shall not be responsible for monitoring activities such as computer use and reading time beyond the established Safe Place: Homework Help rules relating to these topics. It is the responsibility of the student's family to make clear their expectations to the students about how to spend his or her time while at Safe Place: Homework Help.
REGISTRATION
Registration is not required for students, but parents may indicate children's emergency contacts, insurance information, allergies, health problems, and 504 Plan or Individual Education Plan on registration forms obtained from the Safe Place Coordinator.
PRAYER and MEDITATION
The staff at Trinity Lutheran Congregation will do their best to provide individuals with a quiet meditation space when needed.
ADULT STUDENTS
College and adult students will find tutoring and homework help on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at Augsburg College in Foss Center, Room 22B from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, beginning October 5, 2010.
